Markets

Who can resist our weekend markets, the best way to gain an overview of the region’s produce and arts and crafts in one colourful burst?

The busy Port Douglas Sunday markets are famous with its many stalls at Anzac Park, a place to meet up, have a snack and to shop for fresh ingredients for lunch and dinner. Other features include jewellery, clothes, toys and examples of the arts and crafts of the region, especially the wood articles, carved and polished to emphasise the wonderful grains of the local rainforest species.

The setting is pretty and the atmosphere such that these markets are a favourite with locals as well as visitors as are the Mossman Markets held every Saturday in the grounds of St John’s Church in the shade of an avenue of magnificent raintrees. Here, you can select from the contents of boxes of bright tropical fruit, vegetables and herbs, choose from exotic combinations of jams and preserves and chat to locals about their farms and gardens and the joys of growing the produce. In the mango season, you won’t believe your eyes as these favourite fruits grow in such abundance that buying a box or two will seem only natural.

Further afield on the Atherton Tablelands, the Yungaburra Markets are held on the fourth Saturday of the month offering not only a wide selection of the marvellous produce of the tablelands but also its arts and crafts, artworks by local painters as well as jewellery and clothing. Wandering, browsing and enjoying the open-air atmosphere and food is all part of the enjoyment.
